Impact of Social Media

Social Media - WOW want an impact it has today.

People discuss everything with everyone around the world. A small event happening in one small corner of the world can catch the attention of the entire world within hours.

It could range from a petty road fight to a huge social issue. Within hours thousands of people are casting their opinion. It has grown to an extent that even elections are getting decided now based on social media campaigning. In our previous National elections, the honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi used social media effectively for his campaigning. It is believed that his campaigning started well before a year before the elections. Such is the impact of Social Media.

Facebook, YouTube videos, Blogs are increasingly becoming very important today. I recently came across a post in Facebook where one person had posted about his missing father in Mumbai local train station. Within hours his father was located by a Facebook user. This is one of the best examples of how Facebook can be used effectively.

Another social media application which is growing very fast today is Whats App. Videos and messages are sent so fast. In fact it has become more effective than Facebook I would say.

I reside in Chennai and recently during the Chennai floods I noticed the impact of Social Media. So many people were requesting to trace their family who were stuck in flood. Within hours someone would confirm about the safety. NGOs gathered volunteers through social media to collect and provide relief measures.

Social Media is also used to fight against various social issues. Recently a video of a daughter in law abusing her mother in law had surfaced and within hours action was taken against her. So people are very careful today when anything is posted on Social Media.

Even consumer complaints are getting resolved quickly when consumers log into the Social Media and post the complaint. Because the company is worried about their service issues getting discussed by thousands of people in social media.

We sitting in India can get information about something happening in other corner of the world.

It also has some disadvantages as well. In some case people take undue advantage of social media for false campaigning. Some females are threatened or abused by posting or threatening to post adult videos in social media. Social Media is also like a double edged knife. It can be used for a good cause as well as evil.

Parents have a very important role in teaching their kids about the efficient way of using social media rather than just using them for sharing jokes, pictures and videos.
